A study has been made of the adsorption onto Aerosil silica of poly (ethylene oxide) from six solvents: polymer molecular weights range from 390 to 190,000. The results indicate that poly (ethylene oxide) deposited from water adopts a nearly flat conformation but that moderate looping into the solution phase occurs on adsorption from organic liquids; poly-mers of lower molecular weight appear to lie closer tothe surface than those of greater chain length. The extent of adsorption depends strongly upon the solvent in a manner which can be rationalized by consideration of both the polymer-solvent interaction and the competition between polymer segments and solvent molecules for surface sites. Sur-face modifications which convert silica hydroxyls to less polar groups bring about a reduc-tion in polymeradsorption.
