Despite the clinical importance of metastasis, laboratory studies on the molecular mechanisms responsible have been less numerous than those focused on the earlier event of neoplastic transformation. Nonetheless research on basic cellular and molecular characteristics has produced findings which could be relevant to our understanding of tumour dissemination. Attributing significance to these is fraught with difficulty, in part because of the complexity of tumour spread and in part because metastasis is often a late manifestation in tumour development. The process of tumour progression1 means that changes in gene expression, arising as a consequence of loss, inactivation, mutation, or overexpression of many genes, may be varied and complex.
