1. The last several years have seen a number of relatively successful experiments by various scholars in estimating time depth by counting cognates in test vocabularies. This development is of great interest for the reconstruction of prehistory because it offers a time dimension for ethnic contacts shown by linguistic relationships. In the light of historically known locations of peoples, it gives evidence regarding their prehistoric location and movements at given periods of the past.
