Abstract The Brazilian industry during the Great Depression has been studied under several angles, but healthy relatively scarce the works that are about the eventual changes in the use of the productive resources. Still scarcer they are the works that looked for to examine the acting of the emergent industry of capital goods, an industry significantly more complex in technological terms. In general, the historiography registered the extensive growth of the industry of capital goods in the period of the Great Depression, that would have taken advantage of the barriers to the imports that appeared starting from the Crisis of 1929. But what explain this growth? The expansion of the industry of capital goods then happened it was only extensive or was there some effort on the part of the companies to adapt and to improve products and processes, that it could be reflected in indicators of productive efficiency? The work presents an attempt of answering to those subjects, starting from the data of the "Industrial Statistics of the State of Sao Paulo".
