KAHAN, LISA D., and RICHARDS, D. DEAN. The Effects of Context on Referential Communication Strategies. CHILD DEVELOPMENT, 1986, 57, 1130-1141. The communication strategies of people of differing ages in a variety of communication contexts were examined. Subjects, ranging from 5-yearolds to college undergraduates, were asked to describe a target stimulus so that it could be differentiated from an array containing it and 4 nonreferent distractors. One-fourth of the targets could be described using a simple naming strategy. The remaining problems required information about the color, orientation, or constituent parts of the stimulus. Half the participants saw the nonreferent distractors along with the target stimulus, while the other half saw only the target. The youngest children tended always to use the simple naming strategy, while the older children cited the differences between the target and the distractors in the context-present condition but used the simple naming strategy in the context-absent condition. Only adults were able to use appropriate communication strategies in all stimulus conditions.
