The process of canalization in arterial thrombi is by the development of vascular channels within the thrombus. These commence as lacunae in the fibrinous occluding mass, which subsequently become lined with endothelium and converted into fibrous tissue. There is no connection with the vasa vasorum, which do not penetrate at this stage beyond the limits of the internal elastic lamina. These vessels nourish the arterial wall and may provide a secondary circulation within the canolized mass, whereas the canalizing vessels provide a through circulation. They may develop arterial or venous characters according to whether they are situated in arteries or veins.
