Hidradenitis suppurativa, also known as acne inversa, is a challenging skin disorder. It is identified as a chronic inflammatory condition related to follicular occlusion that results from a keratin-clearance defect. When these dilated follicles rupture, accumulated keratin debris induces inflammation, which can lead to additional sinus tracts or cysts with pus and subsequent epidermal hyperplasia. Patients with this disease typically report pain induced by the recurrent abscess formation and subcutaneous fistulas. The prevalence of hidradenitis suppurativa ranges from 1% to 4% in theWest and 0.033% to 0.4% in Japan. Hidradenitis suppurativa occurs primarily in young adults. Smoking and obesity have been found to be associated with the disorder. The Hurley system has commonly been used for determining the clinical staging of hidradenitis suppurativa. Stage II of this system is characterized by sinus tracts and scarring that are not present at Stage I, and Stage III is characterized by a diffuse (or nearly diffuse) lesion over the entire area.
