The article by Latham Mintus and colleagues reported a significant association of incarceration histories with worse physical and mental health among older adults (Latham-Mintus et al., 2022). The authors analyzed a sample of the Health and Retirement Study and found the association to be worse in older women of color. The study highlights the far-reaching impacts of mass incarceration, and in doing so, it opens a line of investigation that has been overlooked for too long. The analysis gives voice to the suffering of people with a history of incarceration, and pushes our field, and our conscious, further toward an awareness of this community of vulnerable older adults hiding in plain sight.
