This paper will examine student reticence to speak out in English language classes. The paper will start by looking at three examples of how reluctance to speak manifests itself in the classroom, with two examples coming from a first-year university English class, and one further example from data from a junior high school setting. The paper goes on to argue that student reticence may be attributed to a combination of three causes: linguistic, affective and discoursal. A review of the literature then follows, with examples of these three factors drawn out from the background reading. The paper then turns to how to mitigate student reticence, again by drawing upon current practices suggested by the background reading. The discussion moves forward by proposing a model to improve students’ reluctance to speak by changing the classroom culture from one that operates in the traditional “ritual” domain, to one that encourages open communication in the “interactional” domain.
