Electroconvulsive shock has been reported to increase dopamine receptor sensitivity as measured behaviorally, but no change could previously be measured biochemically. When chronic haloperidol treatment was used to induce supersensitivity as model of exogenous or pathologic receptor changes, electroconvulsive shock was found to stabilize the dopamine receptor both biochemically and behaviorally.
