Seawater has an extremely low ratio of barium to strontium in comparison to terrestrial ratios. Low Ba/Sr ratios are also found in marine species and in the bone compositions of prehistoric populations who subsisted on marine resources. Differences in the Ba/Sr ratios of human bones can thus be used as a measure of the relative amounts of marine and terrestrial components of diet. Some cautionary tales are also presented.
