Around a century ago, Poincare changed the way mathematics was applied by introducing a new perspective on dynamical problems. This new viewpoint shifted the analysis of a differential equation from finding an explicit solution with a prescribed initial condition to a study of the collective behavior of trajectories in a geometric context. Thus was born what was known for a long time as the “qualitative theory of differential equations” and goes more commonly now under the banner of “dynamical systems.”
