Dear Editor, We would like to thank Dr. Shih-Wei Lai for the insightful commentary 1 on our recent research article titled “Allopurinol and the Risk of Diabetic Macular Edema among US Veterans with Type 2 Diabetes.” 2 The commentary raised three crucial points regarding the study.First, baseline serum uric acid was not included in the original paper, and this could potentially affect the study outcome. In response to this query, we extracted serum uric acid laboratory results within 30 days of study index, sub-setting the original sample to those with a lab result. Table 1 displays the baseline characteristics of the sample, including serum uric acid levels. Both groups had similar serum uric acid levels of approximately 6.5 mg/dL. We also
