The preparation of metal dispersions in polymers prepared by radio-frequency plasma techniques is described. Two distinct routes are employed to obtain a metal in the gas phase and subsequentlyincorporate it into the growing plasma polymer. These are (1) sputtering from a metal (tin) surface by use of an inert gas plasma and (2) the use of a volatile metal compound (Cr (CO) 8). The analysis of the polymer films is carried out by using ESCA and it is shown that these techniques produce a metal compound dispersed in the plasma polymer with a wide range of metal-polymer compositions. The incorporation is studied as a function of deposition site in the reactor and it is found that the sputtering route is the most sensitive to the conditions employed. When a fluorocarbon monomer is employed there is evidence that a metal fluoride is formed.
