A slurry of North Dakota lignite in anthracene oil has been treated with hydrogen in a continuous stirred tank reactor in the presence of a cobalt-molybdenum catalyst. A kinetic analysis of the lignite dissolution data obtained has been carried out. The rate of dissolution has been found to be first order in initial lignite concentration and approximately four-tenths order in fractional conversion. Results indicate that the apparent activation energy increases with increasing temperature with values from 19 to 33 kcal/g mole.
