In mice, the stress of swimming induces analgesia, as revealed by the hot-plate test. For .apprx. 5 min after the end of swimming, the degree of analgesia remains constant; it decreases thereafter and is undetectable after 25-30 min. The analgesia is apparent after a swim as short as 15 s and with longer swims (up to 7.5 min) the magnitude of analgesia increases. Analgesia is apparent after swimming in H2O at body temperature (38.degree. C). Decreasing the H2O temperature to 21.degree. C increases the analgesia slightly; further decreases greatly increase the magnitude of this analgesia [which is probably related to endogenous opiods].
