METHODSA convenience sample (n= 31) was recruited from patients visiting a university-based geriatrics clinic between April and August 1994. The GDS (30 items) and the S1P: PFD (45 items) were administered to each subject twice, 2 weeks apart. Half of the subjects were interviewed first by telephone, then in person; the other half were interviewed first in person, then by telephone. Each subject was interviewed by one of two premedical students, one male (TG) and one female (MR), who had no previous training or experience in interviewing. In order to detect subjects with cognitive impairment, the interviewer began by asking six questions that cognitively intact older people usually answer correctly (see Appendix A). If subjects made errors in their responses to any of these items, they were considered possibly cognitively impaired and were not interviewed. Instead, the S1P: PFD was conducted with proxies (mostly family caregivers) who had observed the subjects’ performance of the activities named in the S1P: PFD. The GDS was not administered to proxies because it inquires about feelings, which are not observable by another person.
