Bioremediation of contaminated groundwater or soil is currently the cheapest and least harmful method of removing xenobiotics from the environment. Bioremediation is widely applied due to the increased practical approaches of natural attenuation and biodegradation in most natural marine sites. Bioremediation is an efficient degradation technology that is currently used to treat contaminated sites, since mechanical, physical, and chemical treatments have limited effectiveness. Bioremediation is a natural process of waste treatment, relatively more cost‐effective than other remediation approaches that are used for cleanup of hazardous waste in coasts, seas, and oceans that can be adaptable to variable environmental conditions, viz., estuarine, coastal, and marine pollution, and is widely accepted by the society. The choice of carrier is an essential element for successful bioremediation. It is also important to consider the type of process (in situ or ex situ) and type of pollution. This chapter summarizes recent scientific reports about the use of natural carriers in bioremediation, including efficiency.
