Rat liver contains both high-and low-activity cytoplasmic forms of carbonic anhydrase (CA), identified recently as the isoenzymes CAI1 and CAIII, using specific radioimmunoassay. These isoenzymes exhibit growth hormone-mediated sexual dimorphism in rat liver with CAIII present at up to 30 times greater concentration in the male rat liver, compared with the female, in contrast with CAI1 which is 3-4 times higher in the female liver Jeffery et al.(1986). There is also evidence for a specific mitochondria1 form of carbonic anhydrase in liver which functions in the production of urea Dodgson et al.(1 980).
