The susceptibility of motor neurons of different sizes to various types of reflex excitation and inhibition was investigated in decerebrate cats. The amplitude of impulses recorded from ventral root filaments was taken as an index of axonal diameter and relative cell size. The order in which cells were recruited or silenced was regarded as an index of their relative excitabilities or "inhibitibilities." In general, the smaller of any 2 responding units in a filament was discharged at a lower intensity of stimulation than the larger regardless of the reflex pathway used for the comparison. Moreover, the larger a unit was, the more susceptible it was to inhibition, regardless of whether the inhibition was "direct," internuncially mediated, autogenetic or recurrent. From a total of more than 700 pairs of units, compared in various ways, it was concluded that the excitability of motor neurons is an inverse function of their cell size and that their "inhibitibility" is a direct function of cell size.
