Using microtitre haemagglutination-inhibition (HI) test, the authors examined serum samples from 507 dogs, 119 of which were clinical cases of canine parvovirus enteritis (CPE). In kennels where one pup was positive, sera from all in-contact dogs under 2 years old were positive, but sera from older dogs were generally negative. CPE was generally a disease of dogs less than 6-months-old. The HI titre was high within a few hours of onset of CPE, and the HI response preceded clinical signs by at least 24 hours. Puppies from immune dams acquired passive immunity; because of this, it seems likely that incidence and severity of the disease will fall. Peak HI titres occurred during the first week of illness, sometimes reaching 131 000.
