Three-element rosette strain-gauges were cemented to the lateral aspect of the mandibular alveolar bone in living rabbits. During the lingually directed power stroke of mastication, this area of the jaw was stressed on both sides simultaneously. Silent periods in the EMG [electromyographs] of levator muscles sometimes produced a transient decrease of strain magnitude. Chewing of hay and pellets produced peak compressive and tensile strains of 320 and 280 .mu.strain, respectively, at the active side, by molar loading. On the balancing side, corresponding values were 75 and 100 .mu.strain. During carrot chewing, strains were half as large. Biting produced compressive and tensile strains of 60 and 100 .mu.strain, respectively, on both sides of the jaw. The balancing half of the mandible in chewing and both halves in biting may be subjected to bending-shearing forces in the sagittal plane, which produce the strains observed.
