An interdisciplinary course for advanced undergraduates in the physical and biological sciences is described. The goal is to understand a living cell from the most basic standpoint possible. Starting at the subatomic level, the basic knowledge of twentieth-century physics is utilized to understand the structure and function of atoms, simple molecules, and eventually macromolecules, cellular organelles, and the many processes occurring within a cell. The ideas of physics, chemistry, and molecular biology are all essential to the course, which leads to a unified view of the sciences.
