A highly sensitive Faraday balance has been constructed. It has been designed for accurate measurement of paramagnetic susceptibility of dilute protein solutions. Particular attention has been paid to sample handling. Measurements can at present be made within the temperature range 10–200 K. The reproducibility in measured volume susceptibility, for a 0.1‐ml sample volume, is 2×10−10 emu/cm3 above 45 K and 4×10−10 emu/cm3 in the temperature range 10–45 K. The instrument has so far been applied to studies of antiferromagnetic interaction in some Fe‐ or Cu‐containing proteins and of electronic zero‐field separations in a high‐spin Fe(II)‐containing protein.
