Material damage may be caused by any of a number of microstructural mechanisms, such as for example due to the formation of pores as a result of plastic deformation. Precipitates such as hard carbides and oxides or soft sulphides [1], which are as a rule ca. 10 nm to 300 nm in size, may all contribute to the formation of pores. When plastic deformation occurs around hard precipitates, the surface of the precipitate breaks away from the metal matrix. Under similar deformation, soft precipitates however often form cavities [2–4]. This article is in particular concerned with the identification of pores at hard precipitates in ferritic microstructures. Numerous effects play a role in the identification of these types of pores in the transmission electron microscope (TEM). In this article the respective techniques and approaches which can be adopted to make it possible to identify such pores are discussed. A methodology for their investigation in the TEM is presented and the method of specimen preparation explained.
