C. thermoaceticum, isolated from a crude thermophilic cellulose-fermenting culture, is an obligately anaerobic spore-forming thermophilic rod producing acetic acid but no gas from sugars. Each mole of glucose yields 2.5-2.6 moles of acetic acid. Traces of other products did not account for the remaining glucose carbon.
