Living blood vessels were observed in transparent amphibian tails and in chambers installed in rabbits'' ears under normal and exp. conditions. In former descriptions the lability of vascular endothelium in respect to growth capacity was emphasized. The present observations demonstrated its lability in respect to consistency. Endothelium may undergo the following series of changes depending on the character and strength of the stimulus: Phase 1. Lining smooth; blood cells slip along without sticking. Phase 2. Slight change in consistency. Leukocytes stick to walls momentarily. This phase may persist for hours or days with no leukocyte emigration or may revert at any time to phase 1. Phase 3. Further change[long dash]leukocytes cling tightly to walls in larger numbers. May be transitory and revert abruptly to phase 2. Phase 4. Consistency apparently softer. Leukocytes emigrate through walls. Reversal to phase 3 usually occurs after a few hours and is frequently abrupt. No evidence of endothelial injury. Phase 5. Further change in endothelium subjected to injury. Loss of tonicity. Extravasation of erythrocytes at localized places. No actual break in wall. Recovery takes an appreciable time. Phase 6. Serious injury to endothelium with break in continuity of wall. No recovery. The rapid occurrence of changes in endothelial consistency in response to relatively minute stimuli and the reversibility of the preliminary phases are of undoubted physiological importance.
