Since the concept of a separate “sensory” and “motor” cortex was first developed, the extent to which sensory input influences the motor cortex has been an intriguing problem. It is now well established that single cells in the motor cortex of the monkey are activated at short latency by deep and cutaneous stimuli (2, 6, 26, 46, 48, 49, 51, 66, 68); under certain circumstances the discharge properties of these cells in relation to movement can be influenced by peripheral disturbances (23, 34). It is unlikely that short-latency sensory input reaches the motor cortex only from the sensory cortex. Malis, Pribram, and Kruger (54) recorded from the motor cortex of monkeys and showed that surface potentials, evoked by stimulating peripheral
