Since the discovery of the surprisingly high catalytic activity possessed by gold nanoparticles for the oxidation of CO at low temperature, investigations into the potential uses of gold for various industrially important catalytic processes have been actively pursued.[1, 2] Notably, gold nanoparticles on oxide supports were regarded as highly active catalysts for the selective oxidation of hydrocarbons, methanol synthesis by hydrogenation of carbon dioxide, water–gas shift reaction, reduction of nitric oxide by hydrogen, propylene epoxidation, and preferential oxidation of CO (PROX reaction).[3–8] A number of oxides, such as TiO2,[9–21] Fe2O3,[1, 22–24] Co3O4,[1, 25, 26]
