Below 15.degree. C, sea bass (D. labrax) and turbot (S. maximus) were susceptible to viral hemorrhagic septicemia virus when experimentally infected by the water route and by i.p. injection. High doses of injected virus resulted in > 90% mortality in both species while losses in bath-infected fish were as high as 50%. Diseased fish displayed classical signs of viral hemorrhagic septicemia, and larger numbers of virus were recovered from their organs. Neutralizing antibodies were also detected in the sera of the sea bass that survived the infection.
