biogeography and paleoenvironment of the Karoo is one of change’. This applies equally to the Karoo today and is a feature stressed in many of the chapters. Despite the amount of research conducted in the Karoo over the past two decades, there remain many aspects where little is known or information is inadequate. These are emphasized throughout the book, a useful feature which should provide some direction for future researchers. The book is, by virtue of its focus, rather parochial and I had the impression that the chapters comparing the Karoo with other arid and semiarid habitats elsewhere in the world was an attempt to break free of its provincial nature and provide some appeal to a wider readership. Whether it succeeds in this or not, the book is a valuable contribution to the knowledge of our southern African biomes and will provide a reference for local researchers for many years to come. The editors and contributors can be proud of the result. It is unfortunate that the book’s cost will place it out of reach of many of those who would most benefit from it.
