Live spermatozoa of the sea urchins, Psammechinus microtuberculatus, Paracentrotus lividus and Clypeaster japonicus were microinjected into the eggs of the same species. Activation never occurred in unfertilized eggs by the injection of spermatozoa. The appearance of the spermatozoon inside the egg was the same as that outside the egg. They often exhibited spasmodic motions from time to time. The egg injected with spermatozoa could be fertilized by insemination from outside. No change in the behavior of the injected spermatozoa was recognized at the time of fertilization of the egg. Percentage of polyspermic divisions in the first cleavage was high in the eggs injected with spermatozoa before insemination as well as in the eggs after insemination as compared with control eggs. It was suggested that some of the spermatozoa injected into the egg protoplasm can participate in the mitotic process if the protoplasm is activated from outside.
