Describes the nature and magnitudes of the dichotic cues used in sound localization and the physiological mechanisms that give rise to neural sensitivity to those cues. Neural coding of interaural time and intensity differences are discussed, and the problem of long characteristic delays and the relation between head size and interaural disparities are considered. Free-field studies of the cat and barn owl are reviewed that have provided new information on the nature and coding of cues provided by peripheral specializations. Behavioral-lesion studies of sound localization mechanisms are also reviewed. It is suggested that this research represents the neurophysiological and behavioral instantiations of the fundamental principles of central auditory processing.(4 p ref)(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)
