The rates of exit of 5 cytoplasmic enzymes from chicken biceps muscle into a physiological salt solution were measured. It was found that all the enzymes measured left the muscle at approximately the same rate, in spite of wide variation in molecular weight and tissue concentration. Muscle from chickens homozygous for muscular dystrophy showed an increased rate of leakage, which applied equally to all the enzymes. Muscle which was undergoing neurogenic atrophy was also more permeable to enzymes than normal and was more permeable than dystrophic muscle. Some possible controlling factors in the elevation of serum enzymes are discussed.
