Abstract (en) The popular image of Prince Charles Edward Stuart as a figure dressed in tartan has assumed a central place in the mythologies of Scottish history and has become something of a visual metaphor for the Jacobite Prince and his aspirations. Much of this has its origins in the 19th c. but a great part was a consequence of a contemporary self-conscious promotion of Charles as a specifically Highland Scottish saviour. Argues that it was through the medium of portraiture that this initiative was given its greatest impetus.
