Discrepancy theory is a subfield of combinatorics in which one asks the following question: given a finite set system S 1 ,..., S m ⊆ {1,..., n }; color the elements {1,..., n } with two colors, say red and blue . What is the difference between red and blue elements in the most unbalanced set for the best coloring? The two main results are the Beck-Fiala Theorem and Spencer’s Theorem, which both have very elegant proofs as we will see in this lecture.
