BackgroundExtracts from the leaves of Ginkgo biloba (maidenhair tree, see figure) have been used therapeutically for centuries. Ginkgo, like ginseng, is mentioned in the traditional Chinese pharmacopoeia. The Chinese make tea from parts of the ginkgo tree for the treatment of asthma and bronchitis. In western countries standardised extracts from the leaves are used for other indications and administered as film-coated tablets, a liquid, or intravenously. In Germany and France, such extracts are among the most commonly prescribed drugs.
