MENTAL BREAKDOWN in combat-usually a transient, situational personality disorder-has contributed heavily to the casualty rates of modern armies. 1 In this paper, I shall use popular US Army jargon in referring to it as the NP problem-that is, neuropsychiatric problem-and in calling those affected by it NP's. The Army distinguishes three types of NP problem-that occurring in units stationed in the United States; that occurring in units stationed overseas but not in combat; and that occurring in units in combat. The present study concerns only breakdown in combat, 2 and deals only with attitudes and ideas that are found more frequently among NP's than among those who do not break down in combat.I t would be circular reasoning to maintain that conscious attitudes and ideas are a cause of behavior. It can be maintained, however, that the measurement of attitudes can provide clues as to the causes of behavior.
