An outbreak, from which the virus of Nairobi sheep disease was isolated by intracerebral inoculation of mice, is described. Infant mice were susceptible to both intracerebral and intraperitoneal inoculation whereas adults were infected only by the former route. Embryonated egg culture was unsuccessful except for one attempt. The virus produced a glomerulonephritis in sheep, an encephalitis in mice, and skeletal myositis and myocarditis in infant mice. A marked leucopenia and drop in total serum protein occurred in the sheep. Studies of arthropods indicated that flying blood-suckers were not involved in transmission. Ticks, Rhipicephalus and Amblyomma, were present and the virus was recovered from ticks of the Rhipicephalus genus which were removed from a sheep that subsequently died from the disease. Neutralizing antibody was found in sera of sheep and goats in other localities and in one human serum. || ABSTRACT AUTHORS: W. B. Bell
