brilliant assessment of Patton’s strengths, weaknesses, and peculiarities, including his belief in Valhalla—a soldier’s heaven—and his use of that idea to control personal fear on the battlefield. In the end, Patton’s mind, “at once broad and narrow, genteel and vulgar, receptive to new military ideas but in other ways stagnant and even regressive” (p. 702) is at the center of this fascinating story. If the writing of history is, as one observer noted, a conversation with the past, it is clear from General Patton that the conversation is not yet closed on this famous commander. While one may disagree with some of Professor Hirshson’s conclusions, his depth of research and analysis are unquestionable. This book is an important addition to the historiography of both Patton and of World War II and belongs on the shelf of any student of U.S. military history and its commanders.
