The inhibition of thymus-derived lymphocyte-mediated cytolysis by histamine has been studied in a cytolytic system with immune C57BL/6 effector cells and DBA/2 mastocytoma target cells. Histamine inhibited cytolysis in a reversible manner, and stimulated intracellular cyclic AMP levels in the effector cell. Histamine inhibition was specifically antagonized by burimamide but not by other antihistamines, such as diphenhydramine. The specificity of this antagonism suggests that the histamine receptor on effector thymus-derived cells is of the histamine 2 type only.
