Frequently, progress in science goes together with the introduction of new techniques and new methods. During the last one and a half decades the development of several methods for assaying melatonin (MEL) levels in body fluids was such a landmark for human pineal research. The following, presentation will give a brief survey of what has been learned about MEL's secretion patterns in humans since then. It particularly concerns rhythmic circadian and infradian changes in blood MEL levels as well as alterations of blood MEL concentrations that occur with aging. It also considers the possible effects of these changes on human sexual maturation.
