Despite the fact that coronary heart disease is the leading cause of death among United States blacks, few data are available in the literature about the strength and consistency of the statistical associations of blood pressure, blood lipid levels, smoking habits, and other CHD risk factors in whites as observed in black populations. Consequently, no single or multivariate risk score exists that is applicable to blacks. Although considerable information is available about population prevalence of hypertension, smoking, and hypercholesterolemia among blacks, prevalence data are inadequate for most other potential risk factors (type A behavior pattern, physical inactivity, and dietary composition). This lack of information is a serious impediment to full understanding of the cause of CHD as well as to primary and secondary prevention of CHD in the black population. Seven types of research are outlined that we consider urgently needed.
