In the midst of growing interest in osteoporosis, the degree of emphasis placed on the role of nutrition has been a continuing source of controversy. In some instances, the importance of diet in the prevention of osteoporosis has been overemphasized by those who stand to benefit from the marketing of certain dietary supplements. In other situations, the role of nutrition in both prevention and treatment of osteoporosis has been underrecognized. The relationship of nutrient status and metabolism to the prevalence and severity of osteoporosis is obviously complex and is difficult to ascertain in clinical studies because of the multidimensional nature of the disease. Although the exact cause of primary osteoporosis is unknown, it is unlikely that the dietary deficiency of a single nutrient constitutes a predominant cause of either type I (postmenopausal) or type II (agerelated) osteoporosis. However, it is clear that nutrition may play an important role in the prevention and treatment of both types of this disease.
