Eurocentric, formal systems, which are still universally regarded as the paradigm of good education, despite their capacity to cause disparities in provision between different regions and groups. That these sections are topical is shown by their frequent reference to recent events, such as the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Unfortunately, this very quality sometimes leads to the book having a rushed feel. For example, it ends with a strong recommendation that the reader seek out a specific book which is given a different title in the ‘Further Reading’ list. Similar slips are to be found elsewhere in the text. In a section on the effect of war on education, for example, Brock tells us that, ‘many teachers may have been agents of the oppression’, but not being obvious about what ‘oppression’ is being talked about. These are, however, minor quibbles. ‘Education as a Global Concern’ remains a refreshing look at a field of considerable interest. What Brock has successfully done is to highlight the central role of education in the challenges which face the world today. Certainly, his target readership of Bachelors and Masters Degree students will find much to stimulate them and it is easy to envisage this book appearing on the reference lists of many top grade dissertations.
