This third edition of Wilfried Linder’s Digital Photogrammetry has benefited from a number of significant improvements in both the text and the software that accompanies the book. The subtitle for the first edition of Theory and Applications has now been changed to A Practical Course; an adjustment that I feel is much more reflective of the contents.[A review of the first edition was also published in this journal (Behan, 2004).] The book begins with an overview of stereo-photogrammetric theory, mostly from an aerial frame camera perspective, and some theoretical points are expanded upon in the worked examples that follow. While the main fundamentals of stereoscopic theory are included, the depth at which they are examined is, as stated in the preface to the first edition, more appropriate to photogrammetry for lower accuracy applications, such as forestry, geography and geology. Cartographers and spatial scientists in general would need to examine other texts to ensure sufficient understanding of key principles. The book continues with a description of the LISA (FOTO, Basic and FFSAT) software, its PC requirements and the installation procedure. A ‘‘light’’version of Dr.-Ing. Karsten Jacobsen’s University of Hanover’s BLUH software is also included to enable bundle block adjustment to be performed. Installation is simple although all of the installation instructions are given in German. Most steps are sufficiently logical that this is unlikely to cause major issues but the author should address this problem in a future software release. If installing over an older version of LISA no warning is given so it would be best to rename the old software first.
