Eighty-two less-than-one-micron clay samples ranging in distance from 4 to 3,800 feet from the Knight fluorspar deposit were examined for effects of hydrothermal alteration. The 1Md polymorph of illite, containing less than 5 percent expandable layers, was the only clay mineral found. Height vs width ratios of the 10A peak indicate a slight improvement in crystallinity in proximity to ore. Chemical analyses reveal an increase in magnesium, potassium, and fluorine close to the ore-bearing fault, whereas calcium decreases slightly. Sodium increased in only one small stratigraphic interval, and boron showed no change with relation to the ore.
