METHODWe obtained the sample of 160 depressed inpatients by selecting all patients consecutively discharged from our facility who, in a retrospective chart review, met DSM-III criteria for major depressive episode. Patients with preexisting nonaffective psychiatric illness as defined by Feighner and associates(12), those with severe concurrent medical illness, and patients who met Research Diagnostic Criteria(RDC)(13) for schizoaffective disorder were excluded.
