The olfactory preferences and behavioral responses of sexually naive and sexually experienced male hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) towards anaesthetized conspecifics were investigated. Olfactory preference tests, in which the odors of a pair of anaesthetized stimuls animals were presented in a 2-choice olfactometer, revealed that both sexually inexperienced and experienced males preferred female (estrous and diestrous) to male conspecific odors, but did not discriminate between the odors of receptive and non-receptive females. Similar results were obtained when a pair of unfamiliar anaesthetized conspecifics were presented in a neutral arena (supine test) to sexually naive and experienced male hamsters. Experienced males direct significantly more mounts to anaesthetized females than did sexually inexperienced males.
