The various nucleosynthetic processes needed to account for the formation of the different nuclear species have been described in the previous chapters as well as the location of these nucleosynthetic events. At the beginning of this monograph, the evolution of the matter which constitutes the celestial bodies such as planets, stars and galaxies was briefly recalled. During this evolution, which lasted about 1010 yr, the nucleosynthesis has modified the distribution of the element abundances. This chapter deals with the evolution with time of these abundances. The basic astronomical object which should be considered for the study of such time dependent evolution is the Galaxy: each galaxy is not only made of stars in which nucleosynthesis takes place and which provide the main source of galactic energy but also of interstellar gas which is contaminated by the output of the nucleosynthetic processes and from which successive generations of stars are formed.
